Usher Team Ministry
Role & Duties


Before the Service
·
         Arrive at least 25 minutes before the service.
·
         Empty food baskets at Food Pantry & take baskets back to the sanctuary entrance.
·
         Turn on microphone in Sacristy.
·
         Turn on all sanctuary lights.
·
         Winter – turn OFF ceiling fan.
·
         Turn on podium light.
·
         Place bulletin on each altar chair, on altar, and 3 at East entrance shelf.
·
         Unlock and remove East entrance doors red security bar.
·
         Remove West doors red security bar.
·
         Return to South entrance hallway, hand out bulletin with a warm smile. 
·
         Greet our Parishioners and Guests (not visitors) and say “Welcome to St. Timothy’s!”
·
         Ask, “Do you need a large print bulletin?”
·
         Insure all Readers (scheduled lector’s and Prayers of the People intercessor) are present.  If not, find a replacement and tell Rebecca who the replacement or substitute is.   If a replacement/substitute reader has taken the POP black notebook – remind them to tell Rebecca that they will be reading the POP.

Guests with Children:
·
         If a first time guests arrive with children ages 3 and older – tell them about our children’s spiritual formation program and give them directions to the Godly Play classroom.
·
         With children under age 3 tell guests, “Your child/children are welcome to stay with you in the worship service.  There are children’s activity bags on the hooks in the hallway and there is a play room – if your child/children need an activity break during the worship service.

·     During the Worship Service:
·
         First Usher follows the CA in the procession carrying the basket.  Place basket in the center-front of the altar.  Exit behind the altar and resume position at the entrance.
·
         Second Usher takes a seat with the congregation and stays alert of any guests or parishioner needing help.
·
         Permitting Late Comers into Sanctuary (First Usher)
     o
   After the Celebrant is in position behind the altar and before the processional hymn is completed.
     o
   In between scripture readings.
·
         Inappropriate Times to Permit Late Comers:
     o
   Following directly behind the procession.
     o
   During prayers or readings.
     o
   During Gospel procession, reading, & recession.
·
         Count all people in worship (including babies and toddlers).
·
         Go to Godly Play classroom and count adults and children.
·
         Write down collected total count and give to CA when they pick up collection plates.

Communion Distribution:
·
         At communion distribution you control the flow of communicants – use center isle to proceed & return by side isle.
·
         West Risers – same time as Choir.
·
         Flats…then East Risers.

During Worship Service:
·
         Parents/Grandparents with a fussy child wanting to leave the service – get up and stand by sanctuary entrance door.  Kindly direct them to the “Play Room”.
·
         Someone is ill and needs help, walk with them to the “Play Room”.  If needed, show them where the restroom is located.
·
         If needed call 911.  One Usher needs to stay with the ill person until emergency services arrives and the other Usher needs to go out to Thompson Road and direct emergency services to the driveway entrance.
·
         Wheel Chair is in the Music Office – in the sanctuary hallway.

 After Worship Service:
·
         Set the red door bar on West sanctuary double doors.
·
         Lock East glass entrance double doors.
·
         Set the red door bar on East entrance doors.
·
         Scout pews for bulletins, tissues, etc. – dispose of trash.
·
         Turn OFF all sanctuary lights and podium light.
·
         WINTER – turn ON ceiling fan.
·
         Turn off microphone in sanctuary.
·
         Take baskets of food to Food Pantry 

Walk-In Situations
·
         Keep watch for someone entering South entrance doors – get up and walk out of sanctuary into South entrance hallway to greet them.  If they ask for money or food – tell them we do not give out money or food.  Tell them when the next Food Pantry takes place.
·
         Ask them to write a “letter of need” – with their return address.
·
         If it’s an emergency – have them call 211.
·
         Kindly direct them to the exit. 
          If person is agitated or refuses to leave – Call the (Homecroft) police:
  317-783-4400. 

Unwelcome Guests at Wedding, Funeral or church service:
·
         A pre-warning will be given to you prior to the service.
·
         If possible, approach the identified person before entering the building. 
·
         Do not allow them into the building. 
·
         Calmly inform of the family’s wish and ask them to leave.
·
         Keep vigilant and tell them you are watching them.
·
         If they refuse to leave – call the police:  317-650-4400
